Spin It Around

July 19, 2018

Every day I make her breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I shampoo, blow dry, and curl her hair.

I lay out her clothes on the bed and her shoes at the door. She is 23, she is my daughter, she is autistic, and I don’t know what the future holds.

Do I grieve the fact that I likely won’t get to see her walk down the aisle at her wedding, or rejoice in the birth of her new born baby? I do, of course. It’s really challenging to know your dreams and aspirations for your children will not be.

But do I dwell on it? No. Is it difficult sometimes? Yes.

But we are God’s living creatures born with a choice and I choose to look on the bright side. Jesse wakes every morning with a big smile, telling me that I am the best mom she has ever had (I always giggle inside and silently wonder how many she thinks she has had).

At least a few times a day she tells me she loves me and gives me a hug. Usually, once a week I receive a letter from her telling me how wonderful I am and why.

So, I choose to focus on that instead. It is a choice…. we always have a choice, and I feel like one of the most fortunate and blessed moms on earth!

Life will give us things we don’t expect, and may not be prepared for, but remember, how we deal with it is always up to us.
