Spin It Around

June 08, 2018

Many of us will get up this morning and be bombarded with lots of things happening…..some good, bad, stressful, uplifting, and so on.

Something as simple as stubbing our toe when we get out of bed can set a precedent.

You probably know what I’m talking about when I say that the way our day starts can be an indicator to how the rest will play out! It seems if we start off the day on the wrong foot so to speak, then the rest of the day follows suit.

If we begin the day waking up from a wonderful dream and well rested sleep, often the rest of the day goes very well and we can even let irritating things roll off like water off a duck’s back, more than if our day started off poorly.

Ever since I became aware that there is a pattern to this consistency of how our day unfolds, I decided to become more observant to the events of my day and those of others. Wow….is it ever true; it often is a repetitive cycle of getting more of the same!

However, what has been a most enlightening revelation is how we can stop, and turn our ‘mental forecaster’ around on the drop of a dime.

For example, the other day I had a crummy sleep and when I got out of bed I stepped on a metal hair clip that I had placed on the dresser, and, Ouch!!!  So, before I had become conscious of things like this, I would have said something along the lines, “Oh great…so this is what my day going to be like.” Or, “I wish I could just crawl back into bed.” And guess what…..yep; the rest of my day would be a calamity of negatives and frustration.

But, now, equipped with the knowledge that I can simply break that pattern by willingly realizing that the rest of the day doesn’t have to follow suit, and by acknowledging that we can put a positive spin on things to turn it around, things began to change for me.

I would start out by saying things like, “Now good things are going happen to me today.” Or, one of my favorites from Wayne Dyer, “I refuse to let negative people or events of the day affect me in a negative way.” It really, really does work! Not all, but a significantly more of my days are ones that I feel blessed to live, and those days that don’t go so great just provide a little contrast.

When we become aware of our shortcoming’s, it is the most marvelous beginning to turning our frowns upside down, and realize that we have a choice….in many ways we can create our own reality.
